The new Oregon campus for Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD is a corporate campus development, reflective of the company’s and designers’ strongly held environmental ethics. The site planning and landscape design for the project sought to preserve open space, protect adjoining natural areas, and develop landscape plantings that minimized use of irrigation water. CMGS developed a grading scheme to direct the vast majority of stormwater runoff to vegetated bioswales designed to remove pollutants originating in the surrounding parking facilities before they move to natural drainage near the McKenzie River. The majority of the site’s lawn areas are unirrigated, natural looking meadows planted with a selection of grasses and wildflowers. These eco-lawns require 75% less irrigation water to maintain a green look.
